Action Trailer Analysis
22 Jump Street
The trailer begins with the green screen it states that
there is violent content, this is important to have in a trailer as it
establishes the audience who can watch this film. The film trailer is an action
genre, which attracts young adults however the film rating company has
suggested that under 17 should be accompanied by an adult.
The trailer begins with a non-diegetic sound, suggesting a
tense atmosphere and the use of low key lighting suggests mystery. A long shot
shows a car parking up then suddenly something drops which is unexpected,
surprising the audience. The distribution logo appears so the audience know
which company is distributing the film. There is a bird eye view to show where
the location is which allows the audience to engage straight away, there is a
voice over “they found mike dead” this is convention as action movies start off
with a murder to solve this mystery. Mike could be the one in the car that got
smashed; this was foreshadowed in the beginning, we find out the he was the one
who fell on top of the car, killing himself. There is a mid-shot which shows
two people talking about his death then there is a close up of Mike’s picture
with his children. The mystery is to find out what drove him to suicide, the
audience is already involved as they have witness the death. We see that Mike
was a significant person as the role is passed down to the lady as the man says
“you’re the ideal candidate.” The audience may feel the women may have done something
to gain this role, then there is an entrance of an older man, an over the
shoulder shot and shot reverse shot is used to show their conversation. He says
“this is a great opportunities” which hints that the death of Mike could be his
work as the women facial expression shows that she’s suspicious.
Then there is a long shot showing buildings suggesting this
is a problem in the business, the text overlap which says “In a World of Lies”
suggesting that there could be two faced characters causing deaths. The female
protagonist decides to investigate as Mike’s death was sudden; there is a close
up of her face to show her concentration as there is close up of the files
their looking at however it’s not clear. There is a medium shot of the female
protagonist she emphasis “big and bad” implying that Mike had found documents
that he wasn’t supposed to know about. This suggests to the audience that it
could be this that lead him to his death. There is a medium shot of a man’s reflection
as he stares out from the window this makes the audience suspicious because the
low key lighting suggests evil. He says “unfortunately the problem is spread”
implying that he had something to do with the death, the camera switches to a
medium shot of the man he’s speaking to. The antagonist is revealed, he seems
like the stereotypical villain, then scene fades.
The follower of the villain introduces another man to the protagonist;
this hints that Jane (protagonist) could be their next target; there is low key
lighting to show that Jane is in danger. The scene fades into a long shot to
show that “the truth can kill” suggesting that Jane’s purpose is to reveal the
truth through the trailer by finding evidence, it fades with statics and it’s
accompanied by diegetic static noise. The non-diegetic music intensifies to
suggest that the action is going to begin now, we can see the villain has the
evidence that Jane found in the beginning, and this creates tension. The antagonist
asks Jane if she made copies of the keys, he’s ordering her suggesting that he
has a higher status that her. She lead him to her desk, the non-diegetic music
that speeds in pace to suggesting that something is going to happen in the next
frame. The protagonist attracts the antagonist which subverts the stereotypical
female protagonist as she’s strong, she then runs away. The villain points the
gun at her, there are close up of glass shattering then it switches to a long
shot as he aims at her again. There is diegetic sound of the glass shattering
and the gunshot to give it a realistic feel. The pace of the scene begins to
get faster to give off a panicking effect as the villain follows Jane to the
lift, this creates suspense as the she’s in danger. The follower of the villain
is in asked to stop the lift we can see the panic in the protagonists face as
the screen flashes. There is a low angle shot of the lift screeching down to
shows that it has stopped. The light shuts down as Jane panics and screams, this is a convention as the protagonist faces problems to reach her aim which is to reveal the truth. There is a non-diegetic sound which is dramatic as the lift is stuck, we can hear her calling for help, the security guard comes to check on what's happened however he's attacked.
The next few shot shows that the antagonist has more power
as she’s trapped in the room, the follower objects to the villain which leads
him to his death, we can see the villain grabbing his weapon. The non-diegetic
music is intense as the old man returns “this is turning into a witch hunt”
suggesting that they’re trying to find about who is revealing the truth.
There is a medium shot of the girl screaming “get me out of
here” then in the next scene we seen the antagonist forcing the lift doors to
open, this makes the audience worry as he’s going to end up killing her. The
scene speeds up as it keeps getting intense, then there is a long shot which
zooms out “the only way out” this shows that the protagonist is going to escape
then there are couple of scene showing Jane trying to escape then the text “is
down” suggesting that she has to jump, this foreshadows how Mike may have been
killed. There is a lot of action scene which shows the protagonist fighting who
subverts the vulnerable female character as she can fight her own problems. The
end scene uses shot reverse shot which shows that antagonist holding a knife
against the protagonist then the lift goes down, then the film title appears as
the background fades into black. Then the final scene shows that antagonist threatening her however he kick him, there is diegetic sound of the kicks.
