History of Horror Genre
Georges Méliès created the first supernatural film in the
late 1890s it lasted around 2 minutes long; it was inspired by gothic
literature because it features elements of vampire films e.g. flying bats, a
medieval castle, skeletons, ghosts etc.
The most influential films was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
which was a German film directed by Robert Wiene. It included distorted scenes
with twisted alleyways, lopsided doors and cramped rooms. It was brought to
Hollywood in the 1920s influencing the classic horror films in the 1930s,
introducing the new code and conventions.
