History of Romance Genre
Romance films include affection, which is a convention; the plot
involves two main characters falling in love with each other. The typical
protagonist of the film tends to be male, attracting the female audience. There
is conflict between the characters as there is an obstacle, which affects their
relationship. Usually at the end of the film there is a Happy Ever After.
Romantic
films have been produced since the beginning of moving picture; it has been
around since medieval era, example includes drawings and literature which
portrays loved and marriage. The earliest Romance film
was Thomas Edison’s The May Irwin Kiss (1896), which was approximately 20sec.
There was a romantic scene that featured a kiss; it was a New York setting,
this made the film popular during that period.
During
the 1927 to 1950, the eras of Film Noir shifted from a typical convention of
happily ever after and perfect love, to dangerous love. Double Indemnity (1944)
showed a negative side of romance because it includes obsessive, which subverts
the idea of a romance genre.
In the
90s and the present day, the Romance genre has increased due to its popularity.
Films such as Love Actually, The Holiday are all famous for their focus on
romance. The romance genre tends to overlap with other genres such as comedy,
action and adventure to make the plots more exciting and entertaining.
