Romance Genre



Romance films are love stories where the plot includes two main characters journey to find love and may end in marriage. The film explores the themes of love at first sight, young or older love etc. they involve intimate and affection scenes. The romance is popular among the females because they are able to relate and fantasies because the plot usually includes the two protagonists overcoming their difficulties, declaring their love, and experience life. However not all plot includes Happy Ever After because not everything in life is a fairy-tale so unrequited love theme is popular so the audience can differentiate reality vs. expectation. Majority of the obstacles the lovers come across are financial problems, physical illness or family threaten to break them apart etc.

Sub-Genres:
Romantic Drama: The genre has a complex love story because the plot is based on forbidden love where there are obstacles that prevent the two main characters getting together; these films tend to end with lovers separating.

Romantic Comedy: This genre attempts to catch the viewer’s attention by using humour and love, the two main protagonists are usually in humorous situation and it revolves around ideal love and they may have to overcome obstacles.

Chick Flick: It’s normally targeted at female audience and revolves around the involvement of the two characters that fall in love.
